Rift is a massively multiplayer online role playing game that has become extremely popular since its release. In Rift, you take on the role of a character in one of two factions, The Defiants or The Guardians, to defend your world against invading forces and of course the opposing faction. Part of the appeal of the game is that it is a massive and immersive world that you can spend hours exploring and developing your character in. The fastest way to success in Rift is to use a Rift Guide that will show you step by step methods to mastering every aspect of the game.
While trying to defend your home world you will run into some serious opposition. In order to succeed you must work with other real life players to conquer the opposition. You will literally be online with thousands of other players at the same time. That is the appeal of an online role playing game: the interaction! You can opt to do battle against computer opponents solo or as part of a team of other player controlled characters or you match your wits against other player controlled characters in one on one or group player versus player combat (this is where things get really interesting!)
Rift Guide|Leveling Up to Beef Up!
In order to gain more power you must first level up. The primary way to level up is by gaining experience points gained by killing monsters and completing quests. You can get quests through a variety of non-player characters. These characters can be found throughout the world of Telara. The absolute quickest way to level up is to use an organized and highly optimized chain of quests. This will decrease down time running around looking for new quests and insure that as little time as possible is spent traveling over the same ground twice. By doing quests not only will you increase your experience from killing non-player characters and completing the quest objective, you will also acquire stronger weapons and other items that will give you the fighting edge to super charge your character.
The big problem with quests is that you can run out of them. If you focus all of your attention on questing you will eventually run into quests that are too hard to complete because of the level difference of the quest and your character.
To avoid a lot of the frustration of trying to level new toons, experienced players rely on optimized quest chains. After spending hundreds of hours leveling different characters you can also develop your own optimized quest chains, but if you want to get there quicker we suggest picking a rift leveling guide to make the process faster. Once you hit level cap with one character, you will know how to do it over and over again with new characters. Some Rift guides can get you to level 50 in as little as 48 hours. A first time player to Rift would probably spend 20X this time to hit 50.
Once you hit a high enough level, the best way to level in Rift is to run dungeons. Dungeons are arguably the fastest way to earn experience and level your toon. Lower level dungeons can give you pretty close to a whole level’s worth of experience per run and are filled with awesome loot. The problem is that you might join a really bad pick up group and suffer wipe after wipe until people quit the group in frustration. If you join the right group and just spend a few hours of clearing multiple instances you can gain a boat ton of experience.
Another great way to power leveling is to combine optimized quest chaining with participating in rift invasions. Basically, just go about your predefined quest chain and if a rift opens or a zone invasion occurs go over and help defend against it.
Another nice, no brainer method of Rift leveling, involves area of effect (AOE) grinding. Basically, AOE grinding requires rounding up a group of monsters and using AOE damage abilities to kill them all. Once dead you rewarded with experience from all the kills plus loot and gold. If you have the right character class (one capable of strong AOE damage), the right area (where there are lots of mobs of the right level), this is a great way to both level fast and earn lots of loot. Obviously, not all players will be able to AOE grind and this is something that can only be done once you hit the appropriate level to open up the right AOE damage abilities.
You also gain experience by participating in warfronts, but it would take you months to hit level cap this way. So unless you are a PVP purist, we recommend using the methods outlined below.
Fastest Way to Hit Level 50
1. Optimized quest chains/rift invasion combo
2. Instanced dungeon running with a good group
3. Optimized quest chains
4. AOE grinding
5. Going it on your own

Rift Guide|Rifts
Rifts are another quick and easy way to level up. Rifts are non-player character invasions in Telara. Every once in a while a rift will open and monsters will come through. It can be very difficult to defeat the monsters by yourself. So partner up with other player characters if you can to help you fend off the invasion and close down the rifts. After successfully completing a rift you will be rewarded with planarite, which can be used to purchase powerful planar goods that can be used to augment the power of your character.
Zone wide rifts generally take place every couple of hours. When they happen, you will be notified via your chat window. As the monsters flood the zone, they should be killed off by all the players who have come to the zone. Once you get rid of the weaker mobs you will have to kill a boss. Try to participate in as many boss fights, monster killings and rift closures as you can. Your rewards will be based on how much you help fight off the monsters.
Once the zone wide invasion has been taken care of you might level up to a new level of experience. It generally won’t last more than 30 minutes. However, it is a quick and fun way to level up.
You will want to participate in as many rifts and zone wide invasions as possible and start accumulating planarite. The more planarite you have the better items you will be able to purchase with it. Don’t give in to the temptation of buying the cheapest items available for a quick boost. Hold off and wait to buy the best items available at your level. You won’t be sorry.
Rift Guide|Player Vs Player Combat
For characters interested in the best player versus player opportunities, warfronts are where it is at. Warfronts are huge instanced player versus player group battles. Lots of coordination are the keys to success here (plus highly geared and skilled players).
At the time of this writing, Rift boasts four warfronts. They include Black Garden, The Codex, Whitefall Steppes, and The Battle for Port Scion. Each warfront has a minimum player level and most are played with teams of between 15 and 20 player characters per side. The Black Garden has a minimum player level of 10, The Codex has a minimom player level of 20, Whitecall Steppes has a minimum player level of 30, and the Battle for Port Scion has a minimum player level of 50. Once you hit level 10 and are ready to cut your teeth in some awesome group PVP battles head on over to the Black Garden. Not only are the battles lots of fun, but it is the quickest way to rare quality weapons at level 10. You won’t be sorry once you earn your first rare quality weapon and start seriously kicking but in PVE and PVP.
Every time you complete a warfront you will be rewarded with Favor. Obviously, you get more if you win. By accumulating Favor you will be able to purchase some awesome rare and even epic quality items. These items are PVP focused.
PVP is a highly skilled art. You have to know your class as well as every other class inside and out. Your strategy should change depending on the class/group composition you are fighting. A lot of this comes from hours spent in PVP battles and warfronts. Smart PVPers relay on little known resources on the internet to blast their way through the competition. Lots of this information changes from patch to patch. So staying up to date on PVP class balance is a must. Using a Rift PVP guide is the best way to keep abreast of all of the changes that are implemented patch after patch. Checkout our Rift guide section to learn more how a professional Rift PVP guide can put your PVP skills into high gear.
Rift Gear
As you level up you will acquire better gear. Gear is important because it affects your performance and determines how powerful you are. The better your gear, the more damage (DPS classes), healing (healing classes), or damage absorption (tanking classes) you will be able to do. The effectiveness of your gear will depend on the item level of the gear and how rare the gear is. In general, epic gear will always be better of rare gear, uncommon gear, and common gear of the same level (epic (purple) > rare (blue) > uncommon (green) > common (white)).
In order to acquire planar gear you will need to do a lot of rifts. Do rifts and invasion events until you have enough planarite and Sourceshards to get the blue quality weapons.
Choosing and then getting the best gear for your character is a bit of a science. There are hardcore computations that people use to find out what is the best gear for their character build. Using a Rift guide is the easiest way to find out what is the best gear for your calling in both PVE and PVP. Check out our Rift guides to find out which has the best advice for building a OP Rift character.
